Everyone gets anxious at some points in their life. In some situations, it can even be motivating such as feeling anxious before a test which prompts you to study. However, when this stress becomes so big that it’s impacting a person’s everyday life, there might be an underlying anxiety condition.
Anxiety in younger children tends to be more focused on the external world- being worried about the dark, monsters, or a family member being hurt. With teens, the worries shift to have a more internal focus such as worries about their academic or sports performance, about judgement from their peers, or worries about their bodies.
It can be challenging to notice anxiety in a teen because they can be very good at masking their feelings. Symptoms can also vary depending on the teen. Some might start avoiding school or activities that they previously enjoyed, they might become irritable and snap at people around them, or they might complain of physical symptoms such as an upset stomach or frequent headaches. Some of the common signs to look out for include:
- Constant worries about daily aspects of their lives
- Frequently seeking reassurance
- Avoiding new or uncomfortable situations
- Disengagement from previously enjoy activities and/or friends
- Irritability or snapping at others
- Difficulties in school/ reluctance to attend school
- Sleep difficulties
- Substance use
Anxious teens may try to soothe their anxiety through unhealthy methods such as alcohol use, vaping or drug use. This might help in the very short term, but it’s only hiding the anxiety, it’s not actually helping it. For a teen, living with anxiety is overwhelming and exhausting. Trying to manage a teen’s anxiety can also be very difficult for a parent. It’s important for everyone to know that anxiety is a highly treatable condition and the earlier they can seek professional help, the faster they can get on top of the symptoms.
