When Strength Becomes a Barrier: Engaging Men in Therapy

For a lot of men, the biggest barrier to therapy isn’t logistics or time, it’s the idea of what walking through that door might say about them. Many have grown up with the message, spoken or unspoken, that needing help is a sign of weakness. That struggling is something to manage alone, quietly, and certainly not something to bring to a stranger and talk about out loud.

That belief doesn’t disappear just because someone books a session. So a lot of my early work isn’t about diving straight into feelings, it’s about reframing what therapy actually is. I’m not here to tell someone they’re broken or that something is fundamentally wrong with them. Therapy is a space to build skills, get clearer on what they want, and work through what’s genuinely getting in the way. Framed that way, it starts to look less like an admission of failure and more like what it actually is: a deliberate, strategic choice. The same kind of decision a person might make to train for something difficult or get better at a skill that matters to them.

I also don’t expect emotional depth to show up on command. Some men come in ready to talk about how they feel; others need to start somewhere else entirely, a problem at work, a conflict at home, a goal they’re chasing, before the conversation naturally opens up into something more personal. That’s fine. The emotional content tends to surface anyway, just on its own timeline.

What matters most is that a client feels respected, not managed. Showing up in the first place is already a sign of resilience, even if it doesn’t feel that way yet. From there, it’s about working together, looking at the options, and figuring out what strength looks like for them. Because strength was never about bottling it up. Sitting with discomfort, asking for support, and being willing to look at the things that hurt, that’s not weakness. That’s the work.
