When people think about therapy, they often think about tools and strategies to manage anxiety, techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts, skills to regulate emotion. Those things matter, and I use them. But a lot of what actually happens in the room goes beyond applying a technique at the right moment.

My approach starts from a simple belief: the client is the expert on their own life. I’m not there to hand down answers or tell someone how they should be feeling. I’m there to work alongside them, drawing out what they already know about themselves, and helping them make sense of it. That shifts therapy from something being done to someone, into something we build together.

I also want clients to spend time focusing on their strengths, not just what’s going wrong. It’s easy to walk into a session only able to see the problem, what’s failing, what’s hard, what feels broken. Part of my role is to help people notice what’s already working, what they’ve survived, and what they’re capable of, because that’s usually the foundation real change gets built on.

The other thing I want every client to understand is that change is not linear. Some weeks will feel like clear progress. Others will feel like a step backwards, or like nothing has shifted at all. That’s normal, it doesn’t mean therapy has stopped working, and it doesn’t mean they’ve failed. Growth rarely moves in a straight line, and expecting it to can make people far harder on themselves than they need to be.

So when someone is working with me on a mental health issue, I’m less interested in getting them to the “right” answer quickly, and more interested in helping them understand themselves, their patterns, their strengths, their pace, well enough that they can carry that understanding long after our sessions end.
