Addiction Counselling and Therapy
People frequently develop addictions as an escape from physical pain or emotional discomfort. While most of us know about common addictions to substances like alcohol and drug, people can also develop addictions to activities, such as shopping, pornography, sexual addition, gambling, and internet use.
All humans are creatures of habit, but some are more likely than others to turn a habit into an addiction. Factors that make people more susceptible include hereditary genetics, mental health issues, or exposure to an environment of substance abuse.
To fully break free of the addictive cycle, most people need professional help, usually in the form of counselling. At this point, it’s time to talk to Endeavour Wellness about alcohol and drug counselling in Sutherland.
The Symptoms of Addiction
- Disregarding work or home responsibilities
- The addictive behaviour begins to adversely affect relationships
- An incapacity to refrain from the substance or activity, despite several attempts
- Only feeling ‘normal’ when using the substance or performing the activity
- Suffering from withdrawal symptoms when refraining from the addiction
- Needing increasing doses of the substance to achieve the same effect
- Organising one’s life around substance use
- An inability to cope with everyday life without the substance
Treating Addiction
The base cause of addictions is often unresolved emotional problems. When these are not resolved, addictions can grow unabated, destroying relationships and lives.
As part of our addiction and drug counselling process, one of our experienced psychologists helps you to discover the cause of your addiction and what can trigger the behaviour.
Together you will work together to form a plan to ensure you have control over the addition, and not the other way around.
This plan can include steps such as coping strategies for everyday pressures, remedying negative thinking patterns, and ultimately breaking additive patterns.
