Joel Curtis- Psychologist
You have been thinking about talking to someone for a while now. Some days you think you have it covered, some days you know you haven’t. You hope and pray that somehow this will get better by itself and you won’t have to get help. You think “no, its ok I can do this by myself.”
When you finally convince yourself that you need to talk to a Psychologist what happens then?
There are many different ways to treat emotional problems. Each Psychologist will have their own style, which they believe works best for themselves and their clients. Therapy needs to be individualised to meet the needs of the client sitting in front of the Psychologist. There is no one size fits all approach when it comes to therapy. There is no magic wand or silver bullet.
What you can expect during therapy is a customised approach centered around your needs. During the first 2-3 sessions you can expect your Psychologist to ask you a lot of questions. You may even find that you do most of the talking in the initial stages. The more you talk the more effective your Psychologist can be in helping you. What your Psychologist is looking for is patterns in your life. They are trying to understand your life history to get an insight into the themes which are recurring in your life.
The problems you are experiencing now are often not new. The issues you are trying to deal with now have often started many years before hand. As a Psychologist what I like to understand is the background story. Once I can understand the story and get an insight into the themes, I know I can help resolve the current problems.
If a client is able to talk to me about their story and be open and honest, I know I can help them. It takes courage to talk and it takes real strength to keep coming back to see me. You may not always like what you are hearing. You don’t have to. All you need to do is have the wiliness to talk and I can help you with the rest.
It’s Good To Talk
