Pattern Recognition: Understanding the Patterns Behind Our Thoughts, Feelings, and Behaviours - Cover

Have you ever wondered why you keep finding yourself in similar situations, experiencing the same emotional reactions, or falling into familiar habits? These experiences may reflect patterns in how we think, feel, and behave.

Pattern recognition in psychological therapy involves identifying recurring themes, triggers, thoughts, emotions, and behaviours that influence our everyday experiences. By recognising these patterns, we can better understand ourselves, explore what maintains our difficulties, and identify opportunities for change.

Different therapeutic approaches use pattern recognition in different ways. For example, in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), clients learn to identify recurring negative thought patterns and understand how these influence their emotions and behaviours. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) helps clients recognise habitual responses to uncomfortable thoughts and feelings, creating opportunities to respond in ways that align with their values. Across these approaches, the goal is not simply to identify patterns, but to understand their purpose, recognise their consequences, and develop more helpful alternatives.

Recognising patterns can help us develop greater self-awareness and understand why certain situations trigger particular emotional responses. It can also help us identify early warning signs, anticipate potential challenges, and make more intentional choices rather than automatically reacting out of habit. Importantly, patterns are not inherently negative. Some reflect strengths, adaptive coping strategies and ways we have learned to navigate difficult circumstances. Therapy provides an opportunity to recognise what is working well while exploring patterns that may no longer serve us.Recognising a pattern is the first step; changing it takes practice, patience, and support. With greater awareness, we can begin experimenting with new ways of thinking, responding, and relating to others. Ultimately, pattern recognition helps us move from asking, “Why does this keep happening to me?” towards asking, “What can I learn from this, and what can I do differently?”
